6 Tips to Jump Back into the Workforce After Being Fired
6 Tips to Jump Back into the Workforce After Being Fired6 Tips to Jump Back into the Workforce After Being FiredGetting fired can be an emotional, challenging experience. But it also can be a chance to find an exciting new opportunity, perhaps one that provides a better match between your skills and an employers needs. Rather than letting the exit define you, consider it a bump on your career path and move on with these six strategies for jumping into the workforce after being fired. Here are six tips to get yourself employed after being fired 1. Get emotions in check.Angry, sad, confused, scared, even relieved- people feel a variety of emotions after termination. Take some time to adjust to the situation. You need a clear head and a positive attitude before tackling a job search.Seek support from trusted friends and family, but avoid lashing out publically or on social media. Potential new employers do not find bitterness attractive. 2. Evaluate your options.Avoid the temptation to a pply for anything and everything simply to ease the sting of being fired. Youll waste valuable time if your qualifications dont match the position, and hiring managers will be put off by your neediness.Instead, truly plan your next move. Might this be a good time to go back to school or switch careers? Perhaps the position you schwefellost wasnt a good fit for your personality and talents, which may have led to self-sabotaging behavior such as chronic lateness or subpar work.Whether in your current field or a different one, think about what would really make you passionate to go to work each day. 3. Use your network. When you have a good handle on what kind of job you want, seek assistance from others.Contact people individually in your existing network who you think might have good advice and/or be able to help you, and let them know that you are looking and would like to talk briefly and get their input, says Marcelle Yeager, president ofCareer Valet.Work, too, on expanding your co nnections. If youre not involved in Meetup or other activity-based interest groups already, get involved. Also attend alumni and association events, as well as other formal professional networking events, Yeager says. 4. Put your best self forward.Rather than assigning blame or offering long explanations as to why you were fired, devote your cover letter and resume to convincing employers why youre the correct person for the position.Tailor material to match the qualifications outlined in the job description. Quantify accomplishments, tell engaging stories, and use positive statements from any past performance reviews whenever possible. Create an equally impressive LinkedIn profile that includes a professional photo, industry keywords that attract recruiters, and perhaps a few endorsements from clients or coworkers. 5. Use your time wisely.Worried about an employment gap decreasing your odds of getting hired? Consider freelancing while you job hunt. Youll earn some income, accumulat e references from satisfied customers, and demonstrate that youre a go-getter.Likewise, consider volunteer work as a way of forging new connections and developing skills that may increase marketability. 6. Be prepared. Finally, do more than just hope that the issue of being fired doesnt come up. Be ready to address the matter in interviews. Know what your former employer and any references you list will say about you if contacted. Practice formulating answers about why you left your last job, perhaps talking about it in terms of downsizing, restructuring, or managerial changes, if applicable. You may even choose to talk about what the experience taught you. Then, get back to highlighting what you can do in the present rather than dwelling on the past.Readers, how do you get yourself back into the workforce after being fired? How to Choose Among Multiple Job Offers
How to Choose Among Multiple Job OffersHow to Choose Among Multiple Job OffersMany in-demand job candidates face a tricky problem today how to weigh multiple job offers. Employers are having difficulty staffing open positions. There simply arent enough skilled candidates active in the job market right now.Job seekers with desirable skills are quick to surface on a hiring managers radar, and its not unusual for them to be targeted by more than one employer. In fact, staffing and recruiting experts have seen an uptick in the number of candidates receiving multiple job offers. A new Robert Half survey finds nearly six in 10 job seekers have received two or more offers at the same time. What do you do if you find yourself in this enviable position? Here are five tips that can help you choose the right jobTip 1 Remember your primary goalsGet introspective. What are you really looking for in a new role? Even if circumstances beyond your control, such as a layoff due to a merger or acquisiti on, helped set you on your current career path, stop to consider what you specifically want to achieve with your next position - beyond just getting a new job, of course. For example, are you looking forA higher salary?More professional development opportunities?Better benefits? The ability to work remotely? The opportunity to work for a certain type of company or in a parteicular industry? All of the above?Keep these initial goals in mind when reviewing multiple job offers, and use them as a checklist to guide your decision making. When youre under pressure to choose an employer, the details of eachs employment package can be so different that they dont compare well to each other. Referring back to factors you previously identified as most important can help you better rank the offers.GET OUR SALARY GUIDESTip 2 Take a long-term viewAs you work to decide which of your multiple job offers most closely matches your primary objectives, dont be blinded by an immediate payoff. Think about t he future and which job will most benefit your career over the long run.Heres what I mean If your main goal in securing a new job is to earn a higher salary, your initial inclination could be to choose Offer A, which pays the most. Simple enough, right? But say Offer B has a lower salary and presents greater opportunity to move up within the organization. Even though Offer A pays more now, you could eventually make much more money by choosing Offer B if you rise through the ranks as expected. Its not always clear which among the multiple job offers you receive provides the best long-term benefit. After all, trying to predict the future isnt easy. But be sure your vision of the years ahead plays some part in your decision.Tip 3 Consider which company culture is better for youIf you dont like your work environment, no amount of salary, benefits or perks is likely to keep you happy, especially over time. So when evaluating multiple job offers, identify the employer you think provides th e most appealing corporate culture, and factor that strongly into your decision.Think about these questionsWere you able to establish rapport with the hiring manager? Could you see yourself working for them each day? What was the energy in the office like? Does it match your preferred work style?Did the workers you interacted with or passed in the hallway seem happy and engaged?Do you know anyone who has worked for the company? If so, what feedback does your contact have?If work-life balance is important to you, ask hiring managers about programs and policies designed to help workers find that balance. If youre hoping to find a very social work environment, look into how the company encourages employees to relax and have fun together.Tip 4 Take the drivers seatIts your decision whether to let potential employers know that you have multiple job offers. Keep in mind, though, that being up front about this can be a powerful negotiation tool. For instance, maybe youre close to saying yes to a company, but that firm gives less vacation time than another. You could ask your preferred employer if theyd be willing to match the competition.Having multiple job offers could also prove beneficial if an employer has expressed serious interest in hiring you - by inviting you back for several rounds of interviews, for example - but has yet to extend an offer. Mentioning that you have other offers in hand could compel the company to speed things up.But be careful. Its easy to overplay your hand. Only you know how much room you have to negotiate and how comfortable you are doing so.Tip 5 Be thoughtful but act fastThe most important part about weighing multiple job offers is ensuring that you give yourself time to carefully think through your choices. However, you dont want to drag your feet so that you leave an employer hanging - and, perhaps, lose out on a great opportunity. Its not unreasonable to request a few days to contemplate your options. When you arrive at your deci sion, be gracious to the employers whose job offers you decline, and politely explain why the offer did not meet your needs. You never know when you might be searching for another job and cross paths with these individuals again. Paul McDonald Paul McDonald is senior executive director at Robert Half. The Right Way to Network With a Recruiter
The Right Way to Network With a RecruiterThe Right Way to Network With a Recruiter Tired of applying to jobs, but getting nowhere? According to career experts , it may be because youre not going out of your way to network. But if youre dreading the thought of going to another industry meet-and-greet or grabbing coffee with your former coworker, you can relax - networking can be much simpler than that. In fact, you dont even necessarily have to leave home. A gesture as small as shooting over an schmelzglas or LinkedIn message to a recruiter can end up making a big difference.Of course, if you want to make the best impression possible, you cant just say the first thing that comes to mind - youll have to be a little more strategic. To learn more about the dos and donts of reaching out to recruiters, we chatted with three career experts. Heres their advice for sending a message that puts your resume to the top of the pile. You might be wondering Why exactly is reaching out to a recruiter so beneficial? The most important thing youre trying to do in reaching out to a company recruiter is getting them to like you and consider you further for the stelle, says April Klimkiewicz, career coach and owner of bliss evolution . You may also have questions and want to gather information, but that should be secondary to being polite, kind, enthusiastic about the position and respectful of the recruiters time - these are all guaranteed ways to get on a recruiters good side. And when you establish a personal connection with a recruiter, it can do wonders to help you stand out among the dozens, hundreds or even thousands of other applicants all vying for the same job.It might feel a little strange to reach out to a recruiter at first, but you shouldnt be shy. Really, youre doing them a favor. If youre nervous about reaching out, think of yourself as assisting the recruiter in doing their job. If youre a great candidate, you might be just the right person theyr e looking for, and you reaching out can help you stand out from other applicants and help the recruiter get the position filled sooner, Klimkiewicz points out.So when exactly should you reach out to a recruiter? The best approach is to research the companys open positions on their website, apply to said positions and then contact the recruiter with details pertaining to your experience and the specific job opening that is of interest to you, says Jamie Warfield, Career Specialist at Ama la Vida . But if you do not have a specific position in mind, it is perfectly fine to brag about yourself a little bit and let the recruiter know you are a rockstar candidate in the job market and actively job seeking.Remember, though, to think about things from a recruiters perspective. Rather than focusing on doing whats most valuable for you, put yourself in the recruiters shoes to figure out what would be most valuable for them .You want to make them feel that you are filling a need they have, not just sending an unsolicited resume, says career coach Mary Warriner. For example, you shouldnt reach out regarding a position youre totally unqualified for, or bug a recruiter by calling their cell.Starting with an email or LinkedIn message and escalating to a phone call if you dont hear from the recruiter can be seen as pushy, Klimkiewicz says.Sending an email regurgitating the information already found within your job application can also be frustrating for recruiters since it adds nothing new to the conversation.A follow-up email shouldnt be a copy and paste of your cover letter . Let the recruiter know that youve done your homework and you know something about the company, the job and maybe even the recruiter themselves, Klimkiewicz continues.Having trouble thinking of what exactly to say? Warriner suggests using this message as a template, customizing the different areas as appropriateI just applied to the XYZ position posted on your website and wanted to be sure you r eceived it. I am very interested in working for Company Name, as I have 10 years of manufacturing management experience. I am just starting a search for a new company as I am moving back to the Chicago area next month and Company Name is the first that Ive looked at. This position aligns with my previous experience, but Im also impressed with Company Names drive to innovate and give back to the community .I will be traveling to Chicago several times over the next month and would be happy coordinate my trips to accommodate an interview with you.I dont want to take up any more of your time, as I can see from the job listings that you are very busy, but Im really excited about this opportunity and look forward to speaking with you. If there is anything you need from me, dont hesitate to reach out 555-555-0000.The worst that can happen is that the recruiter doesnt respond - and in the best case, theyll appreciate your thoughtful musiknote and enthusiasm for the opportunity. So really, what have you got to lose? Go out there and network

How to Avoid Being the Co-worker No One Likes - The Muse
How to Avoid Being the Co-worker No One Likes - The MuseHow to Avoid Being the Co-worker No One LikesUgh, you know who I always feel bad for in any arbeitszimmer? That co-worker who can make a room go silent just by walking in. OK, thats an exaggeration. But you know the person Im talking about the awkward colleague no one wants to spend any more time around than necessary. Whats worse, he or she never seems to have any clue how the rest of the office really feels. Which might make you wonder Are there things youre doing that make others uncomfortable? While were assuming the answers no, just make 100% sure thats the case by following ansicht simple rules for not being that person in the office.1. Give People SpaceThere are few things more unsettling than having someone constantly near you when youre trying to go about yur business during the workday. Yes, some offices seat people very close together, but that doesnt mean you should literally breathe down your colleagues necks. Give your co-workers as much space as possible. This ranges from eating lunch away from your desk, working from another part of the office (if thats an option), and even just refraining from nonstop chatter. Yes, you can ask how your cube-mates day is going. No, you cannot check in with that same question every hour, on the hour. 2. Steer Clear of GossipWhile everyone enjoys to hear a little office gossip from time to time (and hey, it can actually be good for your career), no one really likes the person doing all of the gossiping. Often times, people start to avoid the office gossip for fear of getting involved in some career-damaging rumor. No matter how good the information is (and we know, it can be juicy), its better to keep anything you hear to yourself- unless its interfering with the companys well-being or someones life.Unsure of how to steer clear of the drama? Writer Katie Douthwaite Wolf has several really actionable tips on how to do it the right way (a.k.a., without insulting anyone).3. Beware of OversharingA little office small talk is good for general morale, and most people have no problem hearing about your exciting announcement or fun weekend plans. However, you need to create a few boundaries before you embarrass yourself or bore your co-workers to death. (And yes, both are equally bad.)Some topics that typically start off innocent, but can quickly veer right into overshare territorySaturday Night Shenanigans Your office doesnt need to know how quickly you shotgun a beer (though its probably impressive).Personal News Sharing engagement photos is okay. Debating wedding centerpiece arrangements at staff meetings is not.Stream of Consciousness Theres simply no need to explain everything happening outside your window. An easy trick to decide if youre saying way too much In any given conversation, dont talk for more than 20 to 40 seconds at a time before letting the other person speak. This will keep you from dominating a discussion and give you more ti me to filter your thoughts.4. Keep it Professional OnlineOversharing isnt just an IRL thing we all know those people who are a pain in the butt online, too. No one likes to deal with that person who fills the office chat room with random messages about his or her totally welchested weekend, unrelated pop culture news updates, or political rants (for more on that, check out Muse columnist Kelli Orrelas tips here). And, if youre friends with your co-workers on social media, you also need to be aware of your presence there, too. One of my co-workers once launched a very personal blog (Im talking detailed discussions of his sex life) and shared it on his Facebook page. Naturally, we all saw it and read it- including our boss. Do I even need to explain how uncomfortable the next 36 hours were for our team?5. Stop Sucking UpUsually, sucking up starts with good intentions You just want to impress your boss and your colleagues in order to prove to everyone that youre capable of doing your j ob (and then some). And thats totally OKWhats not OK? Always agreeing with the person in charge, regardless of how bad the idea is. Or worse, jumping into action the second the ideas thrown out there, nabbing all the important project responsibilities, and doing whatever it takes to look good.Be mindful that you dont overstep the line from impressing your boss to screwing over other people. For example, offering to take on a new and exciting project is a good career move stealing the project from someone else who was already working on it is a big no-no.6. Keep it CoolEvery office has that one person who runs around acting like its the apocalypse. All. The. Time. The coffee maker isnt working? Shes hoarding Keurig cups and sending company-wide emails about how caffeine withdrawals make her loopy. You send him a presentation 10 minutes after you said you would? Hes at your desk lecturing you about how close you came to ruining the relationship with the client and threatening to tell your boss about your lack of timeliness. The office crazy person only raises the stress levels of those around him or her. So, if youre feeling yourself wanting to scream (even if its for good reason), take a moment to breathe, stretch, and collect your thoughts. Your colleagues will thank you.Sure, there are awkward moments in the office from time to time- but that doesnt mean you should be the source of them. By following these six rules, you should be in the clear.

How to get work experience at a magazine
How to get work experience at a magazine How to get work experience at a magazinePosted October 13, 2011, by Elizabeth Fenech Erlser Dreamstime If youve ever envisioned yourself as Anne Hathaways character in The Devil Wears Prada, you probably already know that a position in the glossy magazine industry is a job a million girls (and a few boys) would kill for. Publishing is such a competitive industry and its hard to know how to get your foot in the door. Work experience works best People already working in the industry say the best way to get a job in magazines is to do unpaid work experience and lots of it. Amanda Taylor, editor of Total Girl magazine, worked her way to the top of the publishing pile with perseverance, a journalism degree and work experience. Publishing is a notoriously difficult industry to get into, but I was very determined to become a journalist. I did a weeks worth of work experience with my local newspaper in Year 10, and I stayed in touch with the editor of the paper throughout high school. The day I finished my HSC he offered me a job as a journalist for the paper. I also started a journalism degree. In my final semester at uni, I did a three-week internship with a tween girls magazine, and I fell in love with the magazine industry, says Amanda. Amandas not the only one who got a foot in the publishing door via work experience. Advertising coordinator for Cosmopolitan magazine, Jordana Rooz, landed her job after 18 months of work experience at ACP. She discovered that carrying out day-to-day duties could at times be tedious, but making industry contacts through work experience was crucial to landing a permanent gig in publishing. None of my work experience was paid even though I wrote several stories and often went in more than one day per week. Sometimes I wanted to give up I just didnt think that I was getting anywhere. But now that I have a job at Cosmo I look back and realise just how important that work experience was. Peo ple do notice that you put in time and effort and will reward you in turn, says Jordana. Who can apply for work experience? If youre keen to take on some work experience of your own, there are a few things you need to do to get started. Different magazines have different policies when it comes to work experience and internships. If youre still at school, most magazines, like Total Girl, offer week-long work experience positions, where you can get an insight into the teamwork that is required to make a publication run smoothly. Some magazines allow university students to apply for internships that last a whole semester. Magazines will take a number of school work experience people (though not all at once) but take only four to six interns per year. How to apply for work experience Magazines like Cosmopolitan and Girlfriend recruit interns and work experience candidates online, which is convenient for them and for you, but also means that lots of people will be applying for the same p ositions, and you need to make a real impression through your application. As the editor of Total Girl, Amanda Taylor sorts through all the magazines work experience applications and chooses the few who will get an inside peek into the magazines offices. She says that the best way to get noticed is to act professionally. When applying for an internship position or a job, you should always apply formally, with a professional cover letter, a copy of your resume (keep it brief around two pages) and an example of any published work you may have. You should always remember to proofread your cover letter and resume if youre applying to be a writer and you say that you have superior spelling and grammar skills, make sure you back it up with a resume that is mistake-free Amanda said. If you platzdeckchen up your email address a long time ago and it sounds offensive or inappropriate, set up a new account using your name in the address that you can include on formal applications. Have so meone else proofread your application before you send it off. Finally, dont be afraid to ask for feedback if you get a knock-back, but do it in a polite manner remember that publishers receive hundreds of applications and narrowing them down to a few select candidates can be a difficult task. What to expect If you have been lucky enough to be invited to carry out work experience at a magazine, the fun and the hard work is about to begin. Be aware that Vogue isnt going to ask you to write a fashion expos on the first day of your internship. Nor are they going to ask you to interview Kate Hudson or Jessica Alba. Work experience positions allow you to get to know the people in the office, and gives them time to build up trust in you. Show them that you can carry out simple tasks quickly and efficiently, and they will give you a chance to do greater things. You can be prepared for a day on the job if you know what to expect. While different magazines assign different jobs to their int erns, all interns can expect that work experience will involve a lot of odd jobs and running around. Stephanie Dalzell, a final year journalism student at UTS, has done a long stint in work experience positions in magazines across Sydney. I did a five-month internship at Girlfriend magazine working as an online features writer. I also did a couple of weeks of work experience at NW, TV Week, Take 5 and Marie Claire, she said. It wasnt very Devil Wears Prada-ish, despite what I had
